The streets weren't crowded in the slightest bit, and it seemed like everyone has disappeared suddenly. The Starbucks wasn't even crowded, and that seemed very unusual. Well, to Sam it did anyway. She walked straight up to the counter, looking up at the large variety of drinks that she could order. She looked back down at the girl standing there and ordered Cinnamon Dolce Latte. She hadn't had one of those in some time, and she was sort of craving one, at the moment. She paid for her drink, then walked down to wait at the counter for her drink.

The guy standing behind the counter handed her the drink, setting it on the counter in front of her. She smiled and said a small", Thank you," then went and sat down at a table right next to the window. She sat there watching a few cars go by every few minutes. She sipped the hot drink, feeling it burn in her throat as it traveled down to her stomach. She saw some people come in, glancing over at the few people who had entered. They were older women, none that Sam just might happen to know. Sighing, she turned back to the window, waiting for something but she didn't know just exactly what it was.

The black saturn roared down the busy road. It wasn't the smoothest of cars, and definitely not the most expensive. But it was her baby. She had saved up a whole year's wages working at Winn Dixie to buy the thing. Her parent's weren't keen on the idea of her having a car, but she basically needed it. Between practice, school and work, there wasn't any ability to rely on other people to get her where she needed to go. And that is exactly why she adored the little black car. It took her places, like Starbucks. That was her current destination, and a much needed one. She hadn't had coffee in a couple days and her head was absolutely killing her. During her sophomore year she worked in a coffee shop for 4 months. During that time, she became rather addicted to coffee. She had weened off of it, but if she went a few days without it, she still got headaches.

Pulling into the parking lot, she searched for a spot. Lacking many people actually in the building as a byproduct the parking lot was rather empty. Scoring a spot up front, she quickly pulled it. The parking job was not the best, but she never claimed to be the best driver. Throwing the car in to park, she shut it off got out and locked the door. Her steps were brisk as she walked into the nearly deserted building. There was only one in line in front of her, and it was a girl that Lauren vaguely recognized from school. Not that she would have fully recognized anyone outside of band anyways. Being a senior in the band program, that is where she tended to stick to. She was busy enough without dealing with other people in the school, and she really wouldn't want to. She had her friends, and didn't really want to bother making many more. She was always cordial mind you, but never overly sociable. She was getting out of this small area, and not wanting to even bother looking back.

Finally the girl in front of her finished and Lauren ordered her drink. It was very specific and basically what she got every single time. "I'll take a mocha cappuccino, light on the foam. Skim milk please." And now was the wait. She hated the wait. It was always pure anticipation until the drink was done.

The place was starting to slowly fill up with people, but it wasn't very crowded, still. The drink rested in Sam's hand, the steam finally stopped rising from the little hole in the lid. She brought the drink to her lips and took a gulp, glad that it had cooled down enough for her to be able to taste the drink itself. She looked back around the coffee shop, noticing that the girl standing at the counter looked sort of familiar. She looked like a girl who was in sports at school, maybe one who was sort of a jock. She studied her, looking her up and down to see if she could figure out where she knew her from. Shrugging her shoulders, Sam turned her attention back to the window. She wished she had someone there to talk to, someone to keep her mind from wandering about things that she didn't want to think about. Her mind started to drift away, Sam trying all she could to bring it back to think about something else. Coming back to reality, she placed the cup back on the table in front of her. She reached into her over sized purse and pulled her iPhone out. She touched the screen and started to read what was going on in the world all around her. She wasn't normally one for reading the paper, but it was a good time for a change. She still had some time until school started again, but she was still curious as to what could be going on around her. Se didn't learn any of this at school, so what bad could it do her?

After she had finished reading the front page of the New York Times, she flipped over to check her text messages. Her mother had never texted her back, and Sam was glad that she didn't. Her mother became overbearing sometimes, but she always regained herself after it had happened. Sam tried to keep her mother calm and collected, and, luckily, it worked most of the time. She started to play one of the games that she had downloaded onto her phone, trying to pass the time.

A bored sigh blew out of Lauren's mouth. She knew her drink would take more time than normal due to her special requests. Glancing around the small shop, she took inventory of everyone who was there. There was an older couple enjoying their coffee. They also looked like the type of yuppies who would be out playing a game of badminton in an hour or so. Not that Lauren had room to talk. At the moment she was decked in khaki cargo shorts and a blue polo. Complete with the lime green undershirt and her perpetual pair of dark brown flip-flops. She looked like she was about to head to the country club herself. Not that she was that snobby, but it was simply the style that Lauren liked to dress. If you're going to conform to a style, you might as well look good right? As she thought this, two psuedo-hippies walked in. They looked like the type of people who would scorn people for walking into a conformist establishment like this. Hearing their orders, she laughed as they both ordered chai teas. It was really rather... predictable.

Other than the older yuppies and hippies, there was the girl she vaguely recognized in there. She looked like she was going to a scene concert, and she didn't exactly adore that style. But Lauren wasn't a person who ignored people by the way they dressed. Despite the preppy appearance, anyone that knew her knew she was too uptight and personable to be a person like that. The iphone that she held in her hands was a sense of slight jealousy for Lauren. She would kill for a phone like that. But knowing that she had a car and $10,000 net worth of instruments that were her own, her jealousy subsided. She was the girl who instead of having her parents buy her a car for her 16th birthday got a flute instead. It was only after she saved up for a year and a half that she even bought her car. That was about 2 months ago. And that is why she took such good care of it. Both the flute and the car. And the piccolo. And the marching piccolo. And the secondary flute. They'd been collected over her 7 year span of playing flute, but the net amount still made her shiver.

They called out her name and order, and she took it off the stand. Debating on where to sit, she realized her utter boredom of that day. And the fact that she knew the girl from somewhere. And somewhere specific in school.. not just generically there. Deciding to take a leap and go for it, she sat down across from the dark haired girl. Taking a sip of the little amount of her foam, she crossed her lengthy legs underneath the table. With a small smile Lauren said, "So don't mind me.. but I know you from somewhere in school.. and it's really bugging me." Another sip followed, along with a slight laugh. Then she took a guess, that it might have been the lower level spanish she took last year. She was already up to the max french and needed an extra class, so what did she take? She took spanish I. "Did you take Spanish I last year?"

This stupid game. I never win this, Sam thought, dying on only the second level. She grunted in disappointment, sad that she had only made her way to the second level. It was one of the hardest games she had on her phone, but she liked it. It presented a challenge, making her want to beat it even more. Sighing, she started the game over, making her way through the first level easily. She smiled to herself, finding that the first levels of the game were starting to become easier to her. It had taken her a while to beat just the first level, but she was almost done with the second level now. Her fingers gripped the phone tightly, Sam getting anxious to beat the level that she had been aiming to defeat for a while. Breaking the last tile, Sam smile, whispering a small," Yes, before continuing onto the third level. this level was lot harder, and she wasn't ready for it. She started it, not knowing what she was getting into, but dying almost as soon as she had started. Grunting, Sam started the game over. She had no idea that there was someone else sitting at the table with her until the girl spoke. Sam paused her game and looked up at the blond headed girl in front of her. Sam knew that she had seen her before, but she couldn't pin point on where. Sam smiled when the girl asked if she took Spanish I. Sam had taken that class, only because she had already done so much in French and German that she felt it was time for a change. She loved that class, but not as much as she loved to learn new languages. She excelled in that class, and she was proud of herself. She nodded her head at the girl, still trying to think of where she could have seen her before."Yeah, I did take that class. I knew you looked familiar, but I'm trying to remember your name. It's not coming to me right now..." Sam trailed off, trying to think of the girl's name. She put her finger on her chin then snapped her fingers a second or two later." You're Lauren Herod. I knew that I had seen you before. I'm Samantha Henderson, if you don't remember, but I go by Sam." Sam smiled at Lauren, glad that she had found out who she was talking to. Sam looked Lauren up and down, trying to figure out why they might have not seen each other very much at school. Sam knew that she was a prep by the way she dressed, and Sam was as far from preppy as she could ever be. She was only a prep when she couldn't decide the clothes that she wore, but that all changed a few years after she started to pick out her own clothes. She smiled at Lauren, again taking a sip of her now warm drink.
